P90X Workout Review

Background

If you’ve ever wondered just how much bigger, sharper, and harder your body could be if you really worked at it for a while, P90X is a great system for helping you find out. P90X—from “Power 90 Extreme”—was developed for customers who wanted more after completing Beachbody’s Power 90 program. P90X gives you more, and then some! This is a full spectrum fitness program--including exercise, nutrition, and dietary supplements—that is designed to take your workout regime, and your body, to a whole new level.

P90X is built around a system of 12 high-impact workouts that involve a wide range of different moves designed to “confuse” your muscles. This “confusion” means your body has to work harder to keep up, and that is why P90X can produce dramatic results in just 90 days. The P90X program also includes a comprehensive three-phase nutrition plan, specially designed supplement options, a detailed fitness guide, a calendar to track your progress, and online peer support.

The team behind P90X is headed by physical trainer and “master of motivation” Tony Horton. Tony has spent the last seventeen years sharing his fitness expertise with professional athletes and sports teams, movie stars and recording artists, and thousands of ordinary people all across the country. With P90X, Tony is your personal trainer, leading your through all of the workouts with his signature blend of encouragement, humor, discipline, and fun. Other members of the team include nutritionist/diet consultant Carrie Wiatt—who GQ magazine dubbed “the queen of lean”—and fitness expert/nutrition specialist Mark Sisson who has designed a blend of supplements to safely enhance the results you can achieve through the P90X workouts.

Exercise Recommendations

P90X isn’t for everybody—and it doesn’t try to be. You shouldn’t turn to P90X to “get in shape” or to lose a lot of weight. If you’re already in good shape, this program will move you from “fit” to “ripped” and will burn away those last stubborn ounces of body-fat. To see if you’re ready for the “extreme workouts” at the heart of P90X, take the fitness test found on the website and consult with your doctor.

The workout regimen of P90X is all about effort and commitment. The more you work, the better your results. You should expect to work through at least one of the eleven strength/muscle development CDs each day, and to supplement those workouts with the twelfth cardio-workout CD. And while all of the workouts are designed to be done at home, you will need some equipment—but if you’re ready for P90X you will already have most of the weights, push-up stands, chin-up bars, resistance bands, and mats you’ll need.

Diet Recommendations

Diet and nutrition are essential parts of P90X. But the P90X eating-plan isn’t about losing a lot of weight, it’s about giving your body the kind of fuel that it needs for peak performance in strength and endurance. That means that the P90X diet isn’t for everybody. It is a high-performance diet specially designed for individuals who are engaged in a dedicated program of extreme physical training.

P90X emphasizes that the three-phase eating plan is essential for success with the program. So, if you hope to see the results they promise you will need to stick to the diet just as much as you stick to the exercise regime. The three phases of the eating plan include:

The “Fat Shredder” at phase one. This is a high-protein diet that will help you strengthen muscle while also rapidly shedding fat from your body.

The “Energy Booster” at phase two. This diet features a balanced mix of carbohydrates and protein with a lower amount of fat to achieve additional energy for performance.

The “Endurance Maximizer” at phase three. This is the traditional “athletic diet” of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and lower fat with the emphasis on more carbohydrates.

In addition to following this eating plan, P90X recommends a regimen of natural dietary supplements in order to get the most dramatic results from the program. These include P90X Peak Performance Protein Bars, P90X Results and Recovery Formula, and the P90X Peak Health Formula.

Conclusion

P90X is not for those who are just starting on the path to physical fitness or for those who need to lose a good bit of weight. But if you are already in good physical condition and want to take your workouts and your body to the next level, P90X is a great option. It is definitely “the most extreme” home fitness product on the market, and if you follow all aspects of the plan—exercise, eating, and supplements—you really can move from “regular to ripped” in just 90 days.
