Navy SEAL Training
The training of elite military forces seems to be of great interest to people. Of course, it is well known that these men are supremely conditioned to execute their duties at the highest level. However, based on the muscle building program DVDs I have seen related to the Navy SEALs and similar groups I think there are some misconceptions about the training necessary for their duties.
Specifically, it seems that the general public has a skewed perception of what these trained warriors look like. Blame it on movies like “Predator” with Arnold Schwarzenneger, or “Rambo” with Sylvester Stallone, but the fact of the matter is that members of elite paramilitary forces do not typically sport huge biceps and pecs.
Instead, these men are typically very lean with good strength to bodyweight ratios, excellent endurance, and supreme levels of mental toughness. This should come as no surprise when you look at the requirements of their duties.
There is no bench press competition or pose-down during warfare. Instead there are long hikes with heavy equipment, the need to be able to sprint out of harms way, and the need for the mental toughness to survive the world’s harshest environments.
To be properly prepared for these tasks training should consist of endurance training, speed and agility training, explosive strength training, and mental toughness training. Make no mistake about, training like a Navy SEAL will not make you look like a bodybuilder or as strong as powerlifter, despite what some muscle building program DVDs would have you believe. But it will make you into a supremely conditioned athlete.
If this is your goal then a Navy SEAL-style or similar training program may be for you. But if your goal is to build muscle and strength as fast as possible then you are better off with a good training and nutrition program designed specifically for your goals.
