Why Low Carb Diets Work



Over the past 10 years low carbohydrate diets have become very popular. Whether it be Atkins or South Beach or muscle building nutrition books like BodyOpus, the low carb craze hit its peak a few years ago and is on a gradual down-swing now. However, low carb diets are still very popular, and the fact that they have survived this long indicates that they may be more than a passing fad.

So why do low carbohydrate diets work so well for so many people? There are 2 primary factors that are responsible for the weight loss effects of low carbohydrate diets:

1. Satiety
This simply refers to the level of fullness you feel after a meal. By eliminating carbs as a calorie source we must consume more protein and fat. Protein and fat tend to fill us up faster and keep us satisfied for longer than carbs. This prevents you from overeating during a meal and also helps to keep you from overeating throughout the day.

2. Insulin
Insulin is a hormone that is released by the pancreas in response to high blood sugar levels. In a typical diet (not low-carb) insulin levels stay high in response to the constant barrage of high-carbohydrate foods. This can lead to some serious health problems, namely type II diabetes. A low-carbohydrate diet keeps insulin levels low, which is beneficial for fat burning as well as health.

The combination of the above two factors creates a powerful fat loss combination that allows many people to lose weight who have struggled in previous attempts.
